Are Air Compressors Useful Tools?
Air compressors are very useful tools to have at home as they can be of help with various projects. If you are thinking of having one handy at home, consider the tips below.
Power
Air compressers may be powered by gas or electricity. Gas-powered compressers are the more expensive option, but they offer wireless use and as such are more portable than the alternative. Also, gas-powered compressers must be used in closed areas.
Electrically powered compressors are ideal if you plan to store them in a fixed location. They are more often used commercially but they can also be good for residential projects. You must make sure, however, that your home’s wiring system can handle the voltage requirements of electric compressers.
Maintenance
Ease of maintenance will depend on whether your air compresser has an oil or oil-free system. Oil-free air compressers are beginner-friendly but they are pretty much useless when it comes to advanced projects. Oil compressers, on the other hand, are slightly more complex to use but they offer longer use and greater reliability. They are also not as noisy to operate compared to oil-free compressers.
When you use high-end synthetic pump oil for your compressor, its performance will improve even more and you won’t have to change its oil supply as often.
Last but not the least, be aware that both types of compressers do require you to drain the compresser’s tank of water that had accumulated during its use.
Power and Capabilities
There are several ways to determine the power and capabilities of air compressers. For many people, this would boil down to horsepower (HP) but that simply isn’t the case. For residential compressers, 2 HP would be more than sufficient as long as other factors like airflow levels are at par.
As for pounds per square, or PSI, this unit quantifies the level of pressure exerted by the compresser. Again, for home use, compresers with 125 to 150 PSI would more than do.
Finally, we get to airflow requirements. If you intend to use air tools with your compresser then you require 6.0 SCFPM with 90 PSI. A lower PSI will prevent your compresser from performing as it should.
Tank Size
The size of tank you’ll need will mostly depend on how frequent you plan on using air tools. A small tank would be adequate if you only plan to use your compresser for airing tires. Just make sure your PSI levels are sufficient as well.
