Learning how to potty train a dog is one of the most difficult tasks you will have to do as a pet owner. The tips below, however, will make the job easier.

Start early.

Teach your do early. The adage on the difficulties of teaching old dogs new tricks is very much true, hence the critical need to start training your dog as early as possible with potty training.

Be familiar with your puppy’s potty schedule.

Knowing when your pet has to relieve itself is one of the best ways to potty train a dog. Every time your puppy enjoys a meal, for example, they will most likely need to relieve themselves – in either of two ways – in fifteen to twenty minutes time. After sleeping or in the middle of the night, your puppy is sure to pee as well so if it’s staying indoors, give your puppy a litter box to prevent it from relieving itself elsewhere. Finally, your puppy is also liable to relieve itself after exercising or playing.

Choose your puppy’s potty area.

It has to be just one area, not several, to train your puppy more easily. It can be a certain spot in your backyard, a papered area in your garden, or anywhere else as long as you take your puppy to this place every time it needs to relieve itself. Consistency is the name of the game.

Indoors, your litter box would work more if it has the same scent or materials used from its potty area outdoors.  There are products you can purchase from a pet supply store that has a distinctive smell which you could spray on its potty areas. Your puppy will then use the scent as an indicator of potty-allowed areas.

Don’t get angry.

Getting mad when your pet did something wrong is not how to potty train a dog. If it relieved itself somewhere else, just clean it up and resume training. Don’t get mad at your dog. Ignore him instead and your puppy will understand your silence soon enough. For your puppy’s part, you can’t really blame it completely. At its age, it doens’t yet really possess sufficient control or maturity to control its bodily functions.
