On January 3, 1959, Alaska became the 49th state of the United States. But before that, Alaska had been turned into an organized territory in 1912. Alaska used to be under Russian rule but was purchased by the United States, with the approval of the Senate, on March 30, 1867 for a little over seven million dollars.
