What Did Joseph Smith Do?
Joseph Smith, Jr., born in Sharon, Vermont (December 23, 1805), died in Carthage, Illinois (June 27, 1844)
Although Utah is now considered the base of Mormon religion and the Church of Latter Day Saints, the first such church established by Smith was in New York.
Smith declared that he had received a set of golden plates from an angel, who said he had a “unique gift” to translate.
He announced his bid for presidency in 1843.
His only legal marriage was to Emma Hale Smith in 1826.
Smith is believed to have married more than thirty women, some of which were already wedded to other men while others were still teenagers.
