Amelia Mary Earheart, born in Atchison, Kansas (July 24, 1897), declared legally dead on January 5, 1939.

She was the first female recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross.

She went missing on July 2, 1937 when she attempted to make a circum-navigational flight around the world.

In 1921, at age 24, she bought her first airplane, which she baptized as “The Canary”.

She wrote for the Cosmopolitan Magazine for two years as an aviation editor.

In the span of five years, from 1930 to 1935, Earheart was able to attain seven flight records in women’s speed and distance.

Amelia Earheart had liberal views about marriage. Her husband, George P. Putnam, had to propose to her six times. They did not have a honeymoon and she preferred not to be referred as “Mrs. Putnam”.
